Easy Tool is an Italian provider of condition inspection solutions with service and support representatives in Italy. Gravure printing is a type of ‘gravure’ process that uses a specialized printer to engrave a design onto plastic food packaging material.

This food packaging printing company has condition monitoring experts from SPM Instrument Italy visiting the factory three times a year to test equipment, gather trend data, and support reliability programs. In November 2015, Ettore Di Pasquale, a field engineer, performed a dynamic test on a 55 kW, 400-volt motor at the food packaging printing plant. He discovered an abnormal electrical waveform.

 

Application form

This 55 kW, 400-volt motor is controlled by a variable frequency drive (VFD). This motor drives a centrifugal fan that sends air into the natural gas-fired burner. The steam generator requires a fan to maintain the proper volume of combustion air for heating the drying section.

 

The discovery

Di Pasquale connected the ALL-TEST PRO On-Line II™ powered motor tester to the electrical panel to perform a condition check test at a safe distance from the running motor. He quickly discovered an abnormal current waveform (see Figure 1).

“Although there was no visible cause for the alarm, motor testing showed evidence of severe load fluctuations,” Di Pasquale explained. “Load fluctuations can occur when the VFD continuously asks the motor to change speed, even when a speed change isn’t really necessary for the motor to operate as intended.”
